Product Sneak Peek: Reindeer Pillow
In an effort to get my holiday rear end in gear, I've been playing around with some different types of product. For the holidays, I've decided to make some cute reindeer pillows!
This is the pink prototype. I also have a green one, but am still trying to find the perfect backing fabric! I am still working on the 2012 calendar, and finishing up a new stocking design!
Happy holidays (a few months early....)

mon petit chou chou
I am not well versed in the language of French. I took 2 semesters of French in college, and was told that I spoke French with a German accent by my professor. Yikes. Yet there was one reason that I chose French as my foreign language requirement during my time at college: "Mon Petit Chou Chou." It translates roughly to "My Little Cabbage". And it is a term of endearment.
I learned this phrase when I was in the 1st grade while attending a small private school in Dallas. We were a refined bunch of children, learning the french words for "bread" & "potato", all of the necessities to get by if by some chance we found ourselves overseas. Around Valentines Day, my teacher, Mrs. Antos, decided it would be great fun to assign each one of lovely little phrases to say to one another. I was given the phrase, "Mon Petit Chou Chou" and was ecstatic to call all of my friends cabbages!

I decided to commemorate this memory in the form of a new print in the Gingiber Shop, available in 2 colorways: Red and Green
So this Valentines Day, as you are sharing a single meatball and extra long piece of spaghetti with that special someone, stare deeply into their eyes and let your little cabbage know how much you love them.

office gifts: pumpkin chocolate chip cookies

Over the weekend I finally got up the courage to do some baking. I have not cooked anything in quite a while. But I love cooking, so it did not take long for me to get my apron out and get my cook on!
I had stumbled upon this recipe for Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Cookies on Catherine Campbell's blog, and knew that they would make great holiday gifts for my office friends. Added bonus, I had a bunch of mason jars just waiting to be used as fun gift containers.

Since I really could not venture out to go shopping for ribbon to decorate the mason jars, I kept it simple with a swatch of fabric on top and a dainty bow of yarn around the lid. Filled inside with 4 scrumptious cookies. I have to make more for the rest of my office (I ran out of mason jars!)

I love giving gifts. I love that some people really appreciate the handmade touch.
Do you ever find with your own family handmade is not seen as special? I am not saying that is the case with my own family, but I can see how difficult it could be for the handmade community during holidays to give lovingly handcrafted items and have them not hold up in the eyes of the recipient. You know, since there are people out there who still think that handmade = a popsicle ornament.
The value of time is underestimated. Lovingly baking Christmas cookies and sharing them with the one's you cherish could be gift enough for me this year.
But I won't look a gift horse in the mouth, say, if the gift horse is bringing me Season 1 of Glee on DVD....

magazines for christmas

No matter how much I adore online magazines, I still miss flipping through a paper magazine while sipping coffee. So this year I am asking for magazines for Christmas! The 4 above are my personal wish list, and all are pretty affordable too!
On a different note, sorry that I have been so quiet this week. I've had a tough couple of days personally. Conflict is difficult, and sometimes I simply shut down in order to process. Rest assured, most everything has been resolved, but I feel uninspired now. I am going to try to refocus, because I definitely want to start out the new year feeling strong. I want to feel like I can be successful on my own terms.
Thanks so much for your support, friends.

handmade display mini tree
Hello! In preparation for my recent show, I decided to build a little wooden dowel tree for displaying my cute little ornaments!
It was super simple! I went to hobby lobby and picked up a thick dowel (inch diameter) to serve as the trunk of my tree, and a bunch of little dowel sticks to be my branches! Then I used the drill attachment on my electric screwdriver and drilled random holes up and down the trunk of my would be tree! Finally, I took a random scrap of wood and drilled a hole in the center of it (inch diameter) to be the base of the tree! I secured the limbs with a dab of wood glue and let them set for 24 hours.
Next, I sprayed the entire tree with silver spray paint (boy was it pretty!). Finally, I used some bendable wire and wrapped it around each branch, so that I could hang multiple items on each limb. and Viola! One cute as can be display tree!
The show is over, so now what to do with it? Well I have a little nook in desperate need of holiday cheer, so I thought that my new tree could reside there! I grabbed an old filing cabinet from our closet and painted it the same color of silver.
Now with the tree on top if the filing (and perhaps a cute wreath) It will make a nice little entry display.
I still need to decorate the tree with little ornaments, but that is on tonight's to do list!

fear and holloween
Growing up, my family never celebrated Halloween. In fact, the entire month of October felt like a countdown to the scariest night of the year. I was not allowed to trick or treat, but rather attended "Hallelujah Night" at whatever church we happened to be attending that year. No watching "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (deemed to evil). No "Casper the Friendly Ghost" (and I totally wanted to watch the Christina Ricci version that came out in the 90's... sigh).
My life was always quite insulated. If my family happened to be home on Halloween, we absolutely DID NOT hand out candy. Lights out. Windows closed. My sweet mother (whom never intentionally meant to scare my sister and I) would tell us news reports about poisoned candy given to children on Holloween. Even our little black poodle, Missy, was not allowed to go outside after dark, because my parents feared that someone would try to steal her.
As a high school student, I took great pride in my disdain for Halloween. I have no specific memory of the conversations I had concerning the topic, but I assume they went something like this, "Oh, you are dressing up for THAT day?" said with a judgmental brow. "Just be sure to pray over your candy before you eat it". Yes, apparently, I was the morality police... no, the sheriff (more authority) and that meant that I had a license to judge.
Then imagine my shock to find out that my older sister, Angie, who was in college at the time, actually dressed up and went trick or treating with her friends! I could not believe it! Wasn't she scared of the poisoned apples and razorblades chocolates? Of course I prayed for her..... Now I look back at my fear driven beliefs with a huge amount of embarrassment. Perhaps I was taking this a bit to seriously.
You see, at a certain point as an adult, you have to decide how you are going to live your life in all aspects. From the food you will eat to the music you will listen to. From the religion (if any) you will practice to the relationships you cultivate and maintain. And even still, you have to decide if fear will rule your life.
Fear is an emotion that has had a grasp on my life for as long as I can remember. As happy and peppy as I may be, I am constantly fighting that "worst case scenario" in the back of my mind. I used to always made my decisions out of fear rather, and that was an unhealthy place to be. Fear has held me back from applying to my dream school, from leaving an unhappy job, even from putting my art up on Etsy. Nothing should have that much influence on your life.
Today, I am making a conscious decision to put all of my neurotic fears aside and to simply enjoy this season. I am going to be bold. I am going to be lighthearted. And I am going to enjoy dressing my daughter up in an adorable handmade ladybug costume and listen to her little lispy 2 year old voice try and say "trick-or-treat". Her little heart has no fear, and it is my job to protect her heart for as long as possible.
This is just my story. My journey. Who new something as small as Halloween could teach me so much about myself?
Oh, and if your view on Halloween, or anything, for that matter, differ from mine, that is A okay in my book!

the gingiber factory
New in the Gingiber Shop: mini plush owl ornaments. View them here.
hey measure about 7 inches tall and are each made with such love! I embroidered each face by hand. I truly love the deep crimson against the bright red.
I hope that you like them.
I think that I will pick a different animal muse for the 2011 year. Any suggestions?

the stockings are finished!
The Christmas Stockings are finished! Take a look!
I am so stoked about these stockings! I have already sold one and have had several inquiries! I will only be making a dozen of each color, so if you like them, you had better act fast! It has been so much fun screen printing again. Believe me, it has been ages since I have done it, so this was a refreshing reminder of my love for printmaking.
Thanks for reading. I know this week's posts have been a bit "me" centered, but next week will bring a bit more content about pretty pretty decor and yummy recipies.

Top of the morning to you!
Remember when I introduced you to my little buddy, "Reluctant Santa"? Well, I want you to meet Santa's trusty reindeer. This is the second of a cute trio of illustrations for the holidays.
I really love the simple expression on this little deer's face, don't you agree?
Right now I only have the print available in the shop, but I will be selling all 3 holiday designs as cards within the month.
You can buy him here at my Gingiber Etsy Shop.
Alrighty!

reluctant santa print- new at gingiber
Merry Christmas!
Yes, we are gearing up for the holidays here at Gingiber. May I introduce to you my newest holiday buddy, "Reluctant Santa". He is the first of a cute trio of illustrations for the holidays.
As you can tell, this santa is a bit reluctant for the holiday season to begin. His yearly gig at the local mall is around the corner, but he has lost a considerable amount of weight in the past year. His costume does not seem to fit! I would be reluctant too!
Don't worry, Santa. the kids will not even notice your new trim figure!
I will be offering him as a greeting card, as well as a fun print.
You can buy him here at my Gingiber Etsy Shop.
